Chapter 30 is when an active duty members accept a pay reduction of $100 per month for 12 months; when they use the benefits, they receive as of 2006 $1075 monthly for a maximum of 36 months of education benefits. This benefit may be used for degree and certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeship/on-the-job training and correspondence courses if the veteran is enrolled full-time. Part-time veteran students receive less, but for a proportionately longer period. MGIB may also be used while active, but as each service has additional educational benefit programs for active duty members most delay using MGIB benefits until after separation, discharge or retirement. Chapter 32 is The Veterans Educational Assistance Program and is available if you first entered active duty between January 1, 1977 and June 30, 1985 and you elected to make a contribution from your military pay to participate in this education benefit program. Your contributions are matched on a $2 for $1 basis by the Government. This benefit may be used for degree and certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeship/on-the-job training and correspondence courses. Chapter 35 is the Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance Program (DEA) and it provides education and training opportunities to eligible dependents of Veterans who are permanently and totally disabled due to a service-related condition, or who died while on active duty or as a result of a service related condition. The program offers up to 45 months of education benefits. These benefits may be used for degree and certificate programs, apprenticeship, and on-the-job training. If you are a spouse, you may take a correspondence course. Chapter 1606 is the Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR) program that is available to you if you are a member of the Selected Reserve. The Selected Reserve includes the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve and Coast Guard Reserve, and the Army and Air National Guard. This benefit may be used for degree and certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeship/on-the-job training and correspondence courses. Chapter 1607 is a new benefit that provides educational assistance to members of the reserve components who are called or ordered to active service in response to a war or national emergency, as declared by the President or Congress.
Once you separate from the service you have 10 years to use all of your benefits. Although separating from service starts on your 10-year time limit, you should understand that if you re-join active duty service for more than 90 days, during the 10-year period, your 10-year clock is reset. Simply stated, you get 10 years from your last discharge.
In most cases you will receive your benefits on a monthly basis. At the end of each month you will be required to verify that you are enrolled in classes. There are two ways to verify your enrollment: https://www.gibill.va.gov/wave or 1-877-823-2378.
