South University Announces New Online Program Concentrations

SAVANNAH, Ga. – December 22, 2008 – South University has announced a series of concentrations to their Associate of Science in Business Administration, Bachelor of Business Administration and the Master of Business Administration (MBA) online programs. The new concentrations providing students with career specific education within the scope of their major include Hospitality Management, Entrepreneurship and Small Business and Sustainability in the MBA degree program; Real Estate and Hospitality Management in the Bachelor of Business Administration degree program; Hospitality in the Associate of Science in Business Administration degree program; and Corrections in the Master of Science in Criminal Justice degree program.

The Hospitality Management specializations in the Business programs are directly related to tourism, which drives hospitality employment opportunities to a significant degree. The leisure and hospitality sector is the fourth largest employment sector in the United States according to the US Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

In the South University Entrepreneurship and Small Business specialization in the MBA program, students learn and are able to apply business and organizational theories to ideation, business plan development, financing as well as on-going management. By combining entrepreneurial studies and small business within the MBA program, South University seeks to train business-creation leaders.

Created to enable students to gain employment and be more competitive in the rapidly growing field of green business, the specialization in Sustainability in the MBA program is designed to prepare students for the practical application of sustainability concepts and practices in their business and professional careers. Students will be introduced to important concepts and theories in sustainability and will allow them to explore many green business best practices as well as some of the future trends in the area of green business. Many students interested in sustainability gravitate toward consulting roles. The BLS reports that all facets of consulting should experience significant growth through 2016, with employment in the management, scientific, and technical consulting services forecasted to grow by 78%.

The Real Estate specialization in the Bachelor of Business Administration program provides students with requisite knowledge, terminology, and analytical skills needed within the commercial investment and corporate real estate industry such as equity and debt financing, property and land development processes, and appraisal and valuation techniques. According to the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2008-09 Edition, the future employment opportunity for property managers is projected to be strong. Employment of property, real estate, and community association managers is projected to increase by 15 percent during the 2006–16 decade, faster than the average for all occupations. Most employers prefer to hire college graduates for property management positions.

Providing an additional option for students seeking an advanced degree in Criminal Justice, South University students can focus on Corrections, Homeland Security or pursue a general course of post-graduate student. The specialization in Corrections in the Master of Criminal Justice program allows for a seamless education path from the undergraduate program in Criminal Justice to a master's level. The master's level specialization complements the undergraduate coursework in Corrections and expands the knowledge base to a more in-depth analysis of community-based programs, penology, and capital punishment. According to the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2008-09 Edition, Median annual earnings of first-line supervisors/managers of correctional officers were $52,580 in May 2006. The middle 50 percent earned between $38,920 and $67,820. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $33,270, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $81,230.

Through South University's online programs, students benefit from accelerated five and one half week courses. This accelerated format provides students the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences degree online in as little as two years and 10 months. Degree completion time may be shorter if you have previous transferable college credit.
