South University Launches Master of Science in Criminal Justice Program

Online Program Combines Established Practices with Instruction in Industry Technologies

SAVANNAH, Ga. – South University (http://online.southuniversity.edu) is launching a new Master of Science in Criminal Justice (MSCJ) program with online courses beginning on April 3. The MSCJ is a 48-credit, 12-course program designed for working criminal justice professionals seeking a graduate degree to advance in their respective careers or prepare for a career beyond civil service.

The U.S. Department of Labor's 2006-2007 Occupational Outlook Handbook forecasts that: "employment of private detectives and investigators will grow faster than average through 2014" <http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos157.htm>. Similarly, overall employment with state and local government is expected to increase by approximately 11 percent through 2014 <http://www.bls.gov/oco/cg/cgs042.htm>. With local, state and federal law enforcement communities upgrading educational standards in these fields, South University's MSCJ program is particularly relevant for today's criminal justice professionals.

"The political and economic changes in the past five years have increased demand for well-qualified criminal justice professionals in both the public and private sectors," said South University Chancellor John T. South, III. "This new program is designed to provide students the opportunity to pursue a master's degree in the Criminal Justice field while preparing them to become effective leaders in local, state, federal and private practice."

The MSCJ program is designed for maximum convenience and flexibility with accelerated (5.5 week) sessions and eight start dates per year. The curriculum is process based with a required core of five courses leading to three specialization options: Administration, Cyber Crime/Homeland Security and Crime Analysis/Forensics.

"The MSCJ program will provide advanced educational opportunities to baccalaureate graduates and professionals regardless of geographic, lifestyle or physical constraints," said Dr. Walter Riggs, Dean of the South University School of Business. "The new program also extends our existing Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice program and addresses the need for current students and working professionals to gain real-world knowledge within law enforcement, correctional, political and legal arenas for management, administrative, research and teaching positions."

The Master of Science in Criminal Justice program joins the University's current offering of online degree programs including: Master of Business Administration, Master of Business Administration in Healthcare Administration, Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Management and Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN to BSN). All of South University's online degree programs engage students with interactive communities, a faculty of skilled instructors and career-oriented courses that reflect South University's rich tradition of academic excellence.
