South University Launches New Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN to BSN) Program

Online Program Addresses Scarcity of Qualified Nurses Nationwide

WEST PLAM BEACH, FL – South University has announced the launch of a new Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Nursing (RN to BSN) program, with courses offered via the Internet. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at South University is designed to provide professional knowledge and skills to the licensed registered nurse, to support educational mobility and to strengthen community health and leadership abilities of nurses who already have a foundation in the profession, particularly in rural communities. The program consists of 90 credits and will be offered beginning in October, 2005.

"The aging population of the United States has increased demand for well-qualified nursing professionals," said South University Chancellor John T. South III. "South University's B.S. in Nursing program will prepare professional nurses for skilled practice well into the 21st century."

According to a July 2002 report by the Health Resources and Services Administration, 30 states were estimated to have shortages of nurses with bachelor degrees in the year 2000. The shortage is projected to intensify over the next two decades with 44 states plus the District of Columbia expected to have nursing shortages by the year 2020. Moreover, the U.S. Department of Labor has identified Nursing as the top occupation in terms of job growth through the year 2012.

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing Completion program joins the University's previously-established online degree programs: Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Management and Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. All of South University's online degree programs engage students with flourishing interactive communities, a faculty of skilled instructors, and career-oriented courses that reflect South University's rich tradition of academic excellence.
